The capacity of the reach-in type is smaller than the walk-in type and though both serve the same purpose, the choice is determined by the requirement of the capacity. Some departmental grocery stores may have a huge turnover and so will need a walk-in industrial fridge, to stock all their items. Hence the requirements of the establishment will decide the type of Industrial fridge which is best suited.

The Industrial fridge is more hardy and is made to withstand daily rough handling. The outside is mainly of steel which facilitates easy cleaning and also protects the refrigerating mechanism from knocks. Doors of the fridge are also more sturdy and fitted with hinges of industrial grade. Another feature seen on the industrial fridge is the locking mechanism provided on the doors. Also the doors close more tightly to reduce the coolness from escaping the fridge.

Walk-in industrial fridges usually have an aluminium floor and shelves. This metal is chosen for its durability and its capacity to withstand heavy loads. The shelves are usually lined in rows leaving enough space for the person to walk through. Some have shelves only against the walls and the other area is used for dumping the packets or sacks on the floor. The reach-in type of industrial fridge may be waist high with sliding doors where the person has to bend and reach into it. The other is the standing type with doors. Many of these reach-in types are fitted with castors, so that they can be easily moved around.
