Several different factors separate a good office chair from others. In addition to the height, depth of seating area, and lumbar support, one should also consider the backrest, seat material, armrests, and swivel features of the chair.
The backrest of a chair can be found either connected or disconnected from the seated area. An appropriate size for a backrest is anywhere from 12 to 19 inches in width. If you are choosing a chair with a backrest that is not connected to the sitting area, be certain that the rest is adjustable in height and its angle. If the backrest is attached, it should be adjustable in forward and backward tilts. A locking feature is also important to ensure the chair does not lean back too far. These adjustable controls are essential for gaining the appropriate lumbar support for the back.
The padding and material of the chair are also important. The office chair should contain enough padding so it is comfort to sit in for long periods of time. In many cases, a cloth material is chosen over leather or harder materials because the cloth has breathable characteristics.
As with many other parts of an office chairs, the armrests should be adjustable. At a proper height, the user will be able to rest his or arms on the armrests and let the shoulders relax. While typing, as on a computer, the elbow and back of the arm may rest lightly but the forearm should not be on the armrests.
Purchasing an office chair with a swivel feature is also a bonus in that multiple areas or equipment can be reached without standing. However, the swivel should be light and easy. Be cautious about choosing chairs that freely swivel around on their pedestals.
