Air Conditioners Appliances — 11 January 2011

Portable air condition systems are typically used to cool small homes, offices, rooms where computers are kept, and even recreational vehicles. If you have elected to use this type of air conditioner, it is important to understand that general maintenance will be required in order to ensure optimal air output, and the life of the unit. In this guide, I will share some general portable air condition tips that you can use in order to properly care for your unit.

1. One of the advantages associated with a portable air condition unit is that it can easily be moved from one area of a structure to another. However, it is important that you understand that it must be properly vented so that any warm air within a room can be removed from the area successfully. Typically, a portable air condition unit will come complete with a kit that assists in creating proper ventilation. It is important that a window is used for the vent hosing that comes with your system.

2. When using a portable air condition unit in the home, you should understand that it also acts as a dehumidifier. This means that it takes the water in the air and actually removes it from a room. In humid areas, such as Florida, you may find that a lot of air is removed and retained within the unit. In order to properly maintain your portable air condition unit, you should remove the water on a regular basis. Most of the time, there will be an internal container that can be removed to empty the water.

3. Just as water is removed from the air, portable air condition units often have a filtering system that assists in removing particles and various types of debris from the room in which it operates. These filtering systems typically contain filters that can be cleaned or replaced. It is important to devote attention to the filters anywhere from once a month to two times a month. If you use the unit frequently, or if it is used to cool an area that is used by two or more people, it is ideal to clean or replace the filter frequently – two to three times a month is considered to be ideal for most portable air condition units.

4. When using a portable air condition unit, it is important to ensure that the outside area of the appliance is cleaned on a regular basis. All you have to do in order to clean the device is dampen a soft cloth and wipe the external area of the portable air condition unit.

5. While it is necessary to place the ventilation hoses of the portable air condition unit in a window, it is important to understand that the actual unit itself should not be exposed to an excessive amount of sunlight. If the unit is exposed to sunlight on a regular basis, it could affect the electronic control panel, and possibly even the coils that are part of the device.

If you follow these basic maintenance tips for a portable air condition unit, you will find that the device cools efficiently and lasts a long time.
