There have been so many cases where people have died in house fires, even though they had smoke and fire alarms on their walls. Why is this? It happened that way because their alarms did not have working batteries in them. Something so easy to do was so easily forgotten and it has cost them their lives.
You would think that everyone would learn from such lessons but many people continue to forget to check and replace the batteries in their fire and smoke alarms as needed. No one forgets when football season begins or that every Monday night is garbage night, but hardly anyone seems to remember to check their alarms even though it is their life on the line.
One thing that you want to do is to never rely on the weird beeping sound that the alarm is supposed to give off when the battery is running low. Think about it. What happens if the alarm is simply broke or malfunctioning? It happens more than you think and you would never hear that signal that the batteries are no longer any good.
It is up to you to make sure that your fire and smoke alarm batteries are in good working order. Some directions on the boxes that the alarms come in will tell you to check the batteries every few months. Well, I say you should check the batteries every week. This way, you will have a much better chance of finding a problem before your house catches on fire. Pick a day of the week, garbage day for example, and make that the day that you will always check every single fire and smoke alarm in your house.
