Are you in the market for one of the highest end 3D televisions out there? Look no further than the Samsung UN55D8000. One of the most expensive units on the market, the Samsung UN55D8000 delivers slick looks and high class features. There are a few issues to take into consideration when purchasing this television, so let’s go over the facts.
The Positive – The Samsung UN55D8000 is just visually appealing to look at. The sleek black frame is around an inch and a half thick, and it almost disappears when looked from the side onward. The distance between the edge of the screen and the edge of the frame is minimal, giving it an almost all-picture look. It has superior video processing and 3D image quality. The pre-installed internet programs cover all the major providers such as Netflix, Vudu, and Facebook, more so the Samsung UN55D8000’s competition. It also includes a Bluetooth QWERTY keyboard on the flip side of the television remote control. The unit has built in wifi, so there is no need to attach an external dongle, which saves you the $80 retail cost.
The Negative – This television is one of the most expensive out there – around $3,300. It does have some image issues. Excessive brightness variation and poor screen uniformity are two of the major ones. When the images on the screen involve shadows, they become slightly obscured. Due to the Samsung UN55D8000’s glossy screen, you get a lot of ambient light reflection. Getting the unit adjusted to the correct settings takes quite a bit of time. It is very much not plug-and-watch! The built-in search engine is quite awkward and clumsy. The thumb-touch pointer control mechanism on the remote control is difficult to manage. In addition, the remote control is not back lit. Using the QWERTY keyboard in the dark is nearly impossible unless you have the keyboard memorized. Even when in ‘game mode’, there is a noticeable amount of lag. There have also been delays in updating the firmware from Samsung.
Depending on where you purchase the Samsung UN55D8000 from, you may or may not get free 3D glasses included with the unit. Samsung have run promotions in the past that include the glasses with the unit, but at this time, they are still for sale separately, at a price range of $50 to $150, depending on the weight and their ability to recharge their batteries.
