After the popular commercial starring Star Trek’s George Takei came outlast year, many folks are looking to Sharp for their next television purchase. When looking for a new LED-based LCD tv, you might come across the Sharp LC40LE830U Quattron. While the unit does have the unique feature of a yellow pixel, in addition to the regular red, blue, and green combination, there are some complaints about the television’s handling of blacks and darker colors.
The Positives – If you are the type of person to watch television in a brightly lit room, this unit handles well in that environment. The colors remain quite accurate in bright areas. The help and support options within the unit are better than the Sharp LC40LE830U Quattron’s competitors. Along with built in wifi (no need for an external unit), there are an adequate number of included applications. The unit does not heat up to a great degree with excessive use. As previously mentioned, the unit is one of the few on the market offering a yellow LED alongside the red, blue and green. It has a very limited amount of edge bleed, and no image lag or ghosting during those faster action scenes.
The Negatives – The black levels generated by the Sharp LC40LE830U Quattron are lighter than generally desired, giving darker areas on the screen a bit of a blue tinge to them. The styling of the unit is a little on the bland side. One complaint by many is that there are such a large number of options and settings when optimizing the set, it takes longer than usual to get the settings correct. The fact that there are separate interfaces for apps and widgets can be confusing. If you are looking to attach your HDMI cables to the rear or bottom of the unit, you are out of luck. The ports are only located along the side of the television. The Sharp LC40LE830U Quattron is not able to show 3D programs. While it is internet enabled, it is missing several major streaming services and apps, such as Amazon Instant, Hulu, YouTube Plus, and Skype. It also lacks a web browser.
While the Sharp LC40LE830U Quattron is relatively inexpensive when compared to others in its peer group, the unit is pretty standard and does not do much to stand out from the crowd. Not a poor choice of a television, but not the best available out there.
