There are many types of boiler piping available for different models of boilers. Despite what some people believe there isn’t a standard pipe that can be used for each section. Boilers are actually far more complex than people think. They just assume that they are simply hooked up and that’s it.
Certain types of boiler piping are better for hot water and others for cold. Remember hot and cold water are at opposite ends of the temperature spectrum. This results in different levels of pressure for each line. A hot water pipe will need to be stronger than a cold water pipe in order to handle the increased pressure without popping.
Cheaply made boiler piping will result in problems down the line. While it may seem like it’s working now it will degrade quickly leading to busted pipes. Everyone can tell you that there is nothing worse than a busted water pipe in the winter. This usually ends up freezing the lines, and denying people the water supply they need.
Boilers have been used for several hundred years to provide heat, water, and in some cases power. Old steamships use to use boilers as the primary means of engine power and electricity for their lights. The means of operation at the time was to burn coal and heat water to produce steam. The steam was then use to propel turbines to generate electricity and the waste was sent through smokestacks.
Boiler piping is still extremely important as many people still use boilers in their apartment buildings and offices. Nuclear power is also a type of boiler system when you think about it. The main way power is generated is by heating uranium rods, then pumping water in to keep them cool. Once the water heats up, steam is produced, and then shunted into turbines that produce power.
The steam is then vented through the cooling towers, which is what you see coming out of them when they are in operation. Having shoddy boiler piping in this case would lead to disaster. Like any power plant a busted water pipe can lead to a cooling failure, and we all know what happens next. This is another reason why many people are pushing for solar power plants in their cities. No pipes, no cooling system failures, thus no power plant explosions.
The metals used in the construction of boiler piping range in variety and quality. Typically pipes are made of copper, but more durable ones are made of iron and steel. These metals are used in high pressure boilers to ensure the strength of the components and smooth operation of the system. The boilers themselves are made from a range of materials.
In the old days boilers and boiler piping were made out of cast iron. This metal was very heavy but also very durable and could handle the pressures associated with the systems. As our skill at refining steel became more advanced we replaced cast iron parts with replaceable steel components. This allowed boilers to be maintained and even repaired instead of being thrown away. Thus saving money, and ensuring a long lasting product.
