Washingmachines were invented to automate the scrubbing and rinsing of clothes. In the beginning they were simple drums or barrels with handles to rotate the mechanism. The technology has come a long way and today’s washingmachines automate the full cycle of washing clothes, from the initial soaking to the drying. Now you just need to load the dirty clothes into the machine, set the type of wash cycle you want and the temperature of water, and you are done. The washingmachine then takes over and does the rest to give you fresh clean clothes.

All washingmachines perform a routine process. Once you have loaded the clothes, it will fill water in the tub, and start to move the clothes around with an agitator. This agitation will rinse the clothes of any dirt. After this the machine will drain the soapy water and fill in fresh water and repeat the agitation, and this time it is to rinse off any remaining soap. This process will be repeated until all the soap is removed. Then the tub spins at a high rate to drain out all the water completely from the clothes.

Although the above process is same in all washingmachines, models differs in the type and direction of agitation and the placement of the tub. There are mainly two types of washingmachines, the top loading and the front loading. In the top loading washingmachines, as the name suggests the clothes are loaded from the top, and the tub mounting inside the machine is vertical. In the front loading the cylindrical tub is mounted horizontally, and the clothes can be loaded through the front of the machine. Both have paddles inside for agitating the clothes but the movement of the clothes and flow of the water will be totally different, due to the difference in angles of the inside tubs.

Washingmachines come in models of different capacities. There are models which are made for home use and their capacities range from 3 to 10 kg. Before buying the washingmachine, one has to know the washing load requirements and the available space in the kitchen. Usually a machine with a 6 kg capacity will wash a load of clothes of approximately 5 to 6 people. There are washingmachines with higher capacities available for commercial use also, and these types you will find in public laundromats and commercial laundries.

Models of washingmachines also differ by the different wash cycles that can be programmed. Different wash cycles are recommended for different types of fabrics. Temperature control of the water is also another feature available in certain models. Although all washingmachines use the same kind of mechanism inside, the quality of wash will differ in different models. This is because of the level of sophistication of the different types of agitators and the efficient directing of the flow of water. This sophistication results in a powerful wash, without causing any damage to the fabric.

Washingmachines are getting more sophisticated with the advancement of technology and they last much longer while giving a better performance.
